    Google Business Profile

A Google Business Profile is the free listing Google uses to show your business in Maps and the local pack, including your hours, photos, phone number, and reviews.

What it is in plain English

Google Business Profile, formerly Google My Business, is the free dashboard a business owner uses to manage how the business appears on Google Search and Google Maps. The profile controls the name, address, phone number, hours, photos, services, and the link customers tap to call or visit your website.

It is the single most leveraged free tool a small Michigan business can use. A complete, well-maintained profile can quietly drive more phone calls than the business website itself, especially for trades, restaurants, salons, and any service that relies on nearby customers.

Why it ranks so highly for local searches

When a nearby customer searches for a plumber, dentist, or coffee shop, Google leans on three signals to decide which businesses appear in the map pack at the top of the page. Distance from the searcher, relevance based on the categories and services on the profile, and prominence based on reviews, photos, and how often the profile is updated.

A neglected profile with an old logo and three reviews loses to a competitor with current photos, dozens of reviews, and weekly posts, even if the competitor has a worse website.

    Common mistakes

Most of the profiles we audit have at least one of the following problems. Each one is enough to drop you out of the map pack for searches you should be winning.

    • The business name field is stuffed with keywords, which violates Google guidelines and risks suspension.
    • Categories are wrong or too broad. A roofing contractor is filed only under Contractor.
    • Hours are out of date, which Google notices and quietly suppresses the listing.
    • Photos are stock images instead of real work, the storefront, or the team.
    • Reviews go unreplied for months, which signals to Google that the listing is inactive.

What a healthy profile looks like

A healthy Google Business Profile has the legal business name, the most specific primary category, accurate hours that include holidays, at least twenty real photos, a steady stream of new reviews with owner replies, and a post or update at least once a month. It also has services and products filled in with descriptions that match how customers actually search.
